Scottish Wedding Photographer’s don’t often complain about the heat. But for today’s wedding, we did have an excuse. It was well over 90 degrees and it was only the start of April. Of course with temperatures like that you’ll have quickly guessed this wasn’t a Scottish Wedding!

We were in fact over in Central Florida for the Wedding of Nicola and Rob Atherton at the stunning Omni Orlando Resort at Championsgate.

Both Nicola and Rob hail from the North East of England (i.e. COLD!!), and for many years they have had a long-standing love affair with Florida (i.e. HOT!!), so they quickly decided there was no better place to get married! Fortunately, as luck would have it, over 60 of their family and friends totally agreed with them and jumped at the opportunity to travel over to the States with them to help celebrate.

So it was all hands to the pumps to organise a beautiful wedding at the stunning Omni Hotel – a familiar landmark to Orlando holidaymakers as it dominates the skyline as you drive south on the I-4 Highway.  This was also the hotel where Rob asked Nicola to marry him so it was really special to both of them.

We all know how much organisation goes into any wedding and this one was no exception. Nicola and her Mum put a huge amount of effort into ensuring everything was just perfect. Their chosen colour scheme was bright orangey/red and the flowers they chose were a riot of oranges, yellows, peaches and creams. Her Mum made the flowers for hair clasps, hair bands, baskets and shoes so that they all matched and they were absolutely beautiful. And the hint of orange/peach was carried through to everything down to the little tea light candles to decorate the garden tables where the ceremony and drinks reception was held. It was a perfect colour scheme to match the gloriously sunny day.

Being used to the cold and rain that can often make an occasional appearance at a Scottish Wedding – it was a completely different experience photographing a wedding in the hot early afternoon sunshine of Central Florida. Wedding Photography in Scotland can be a challenge in certain weather conditions – but the challenge here was just to stay upright and not faint in the blistering 90 degree sunshine.  Fortunately with plenty of bottled water on hand, we made it through the main Wedding Photographs and it was on to the Wedding Breakfast.

The meal and speeches seemed to be over in a flash then it was down to the party! Nicola’s passion for dancing was evident from the off. The American style of DJ-ing and music choice was amusing but effective as the DJ made sure that the dance floor was never empty the whole night, with Nicola taking centre stage for most of the evening. She NEVER sat down! And I’ve never seen so many fantastic dancers under the age of 10. Everyone had a thoroughly great time and could get up the next day to go and see Mickey and Minnie at Magic Kingdom to shake off that morning after feeling!! An absolutely brilliant wedding.

Today’s blog post featuring our particular style of Scottish Wedding Photography is a little special as it features a very intimate wedding that was held up at Dalmunzie Castle in Glenshee – a wedding with just two people and no guests – the elopement of Karyn and Justin.

Karyn is from Colorado, USA and Justin is from Ipswich, England and they met on the ski slopes of Colorado! They are both keen skiers and love the mountains so much they decided to tie the knot in the beautiful Scottish mountains of Glenshee at Dalmunzie Castle, one of our favourite places to photograph a real Scottish Highland Wedding!

Justin and Karyn had searched around for the perfect place for an intimate wedding with just the two of them. Elopement wedding packages are quite difficult to find, so when they chanced upon Dalmunzie Castle they were absolutely delighted – the location, the friendly helpful staff, and the service are fantastic.

For their wedding photographs they wanted Alan to capture the events of the day and provide them with some stunning photographs to share with their friends and family back home.  As all wedding photographers in Scotland know, we always have to keep one eye on the weather, but we were very fortunate to be blessed with a dry day.

Karyn wore a mulberry coloured wedding gown with lots of silver detail so she also chose silver strappy sandals and beautiful silver filigree jewellery to match. She also picked up a lovely simple wedding bouquet at a bargain price from a local florist the evening before the wedding!

With Justin being so tall the obvious choice for him was Tails and a mulberry coloured tie to match Karyn’s dress. They both looked stunning.

The Wedding Ceremony that Registrar, Janette, conducted was lovely – maintaining the personal and intimate mood of an elopement – a traditional civil service but with hints of old Celtic traditions including the ‘Handfasting’ ritual of binding the bride and groom’s hands together with a ribbon and sharing a drink from the “loving cup” (a ‘Quaich’).

When the ceremony concluded, what a wonderful surprise for all of us when Andrew from Dalmunzie Castle rang the old bell still attached to the Castle!! Although I did jump two feet in the air!

All told it was a perfect wedding and just what Karyn and Justin wanted and we were so glad we had the honour of photographing their very special day.

During last Summer’s “Fashion” Portrait promotion, most of our portrait photography subjects were female as you would expect for a “fashion” based photography promotion – however quite often many parents booked a session for their Daughter and dragged any male siblings along (often kicking and screaming!).

Fortunately today’s portrait photography subject Ramsay didn’t have to be persuaded too much as he’d already seen the job we had done of his Sister Meghan’s photographs. Once again we used a favourite location of ours at the old Army Barracks at the back of Stirling Train Station near the Vu Cinema. The buildings are full of texture and make a great backdrop for portrait photography.

Once again we used our signature lighting setup to add depth and drama to the photographs – using lighting like this also deliberately slows me down as a photographer, giving me an opportunity to think properly and compose a shot, before pressing the trigger. In this age of digital cameras which can take thousands of images, we forget that a portrait still needs to be carefully setup and lit before it truly becomes an image worth hanging on a wall.

Ramsay was fairly cool about the shoot, but as with most young adult males of his age, the key objective was to make him look cool. Which I think we achieved – he liked them and so did his parents. What do you think?

Spring was definitely in the air for Eilidh and Jamie’s recent Pre-Wedding photoshoot.

We had some unseasonably mild temperatures and lovely spells of sunshine, so we had fabulous conditions for the photoshoot.

We met at Airthrey Castle in ground of Stirling University – after a long autumn and winter period without much colour it was great to see some colour around. We quickly spotted a field of daffodils and off we headed.

Eilidh and Jamie were great to work with, very relaxed and we had an enjoyable hour getting to know each other a bit better and chatting about their upcoming wedding in late June.

I’m particularly looking forward to this wedding as it gives me another chance to photograph Doune Castle which is such a stunning backdrop for Wedding Photographs. We were last there for Christopher and Helene’s wedding in July of 2010.

Here are a few shots from Eilidh and Jamie’s pre-wedding shoot. They have selected the last black and white image of the two of them for their Signature Print, which we will provide as a 20 x 16 mounted print for their guests to sign as a keepsake on their wedding day.

Keavil House Hotel in Dunfermline was the setting for Hayley and Craig Bunyan’s wedding on a fabulously memorable date for a wedding – the 11th November 2011. Yes, that’s 11/11/11 – of course that leaves our Groom Craig with absolutely no excuses for ever forgetting his wedding anniversary in the future!

Hayley was no stranger to me as I’d known her as a young girl when she was one of my Daughter Nicola’s friends at school. One of her bridesmaid’s Laura was also a friend of Nicola’s and we are also photographing her wedding next year.

The wedding was a fun-filled day starting with Hayley surprising Craig by having him picked up and delivered to the wedding in an Aston Martin – Very cool!  (At this point we’ll pause this blog post whilst all the guys head to the Aston Martin website to drool over the cars………..okay, let’s continue)

Hayley and Craig had spent a couple of years working in the USA at Walt Disney World in Florida, so they love all things Disney and had a whole Disney team of past and present cast members attending the wedding. One of them was asked to do a reading for Hayley and Craig but unbeknown to our happy couple, ALL of them took part (around 12 in total).

Being November, the biggest challenge is the weather and the available light as it starts to get dark very early. It was very cold, but we did manage to get some shots in the Keavil House gardens before we had to head back inside to finish the main photographs.

Everyone had a fabulous time – and the Disney crew were very entertaining on the dance floor in the evening!

I thought I would revisit an image that has won us a number of awards since I orginally photographed it, as we currently have a special “Hollywood Style Portrait” deal going live on a very well known Social shopping site today.

I took this photograph last year after being challenged to to come up with an image that would emulate the Hollywood portrait lighting style made famous by the great Hollywood photographer George Hurrell - Hurrell photographed many of the iconic images that came out of Hollywood and his work was stunning – he used a particular lighting technique mostly using “hot” studio lights and spotlights.

I’ve since become fascinated by that style of lighting and have developed it to the point where we now include it as one of our Portrait offerings presented to clients.

This image was shot on a Nikon D700 using 2 Lowell iD Video lights. The key thing for me in George Hurrell’s images was the heavy contrast in lighting, so we worked in a darkened room and had the key light on full power and zoomed right in (the Lowell has a small fresnel type lens) – the second Lowell was used to light the background and provide a little separation between the model and the background. Exposure was manual and spot metered on the model’s nose.

Since that shoot I’ve fine-tuned the lighting a bit and we now use a wonderful piece of kit known as a Fresnel Spotlight Adapter for my Bowens studio lights. The image was then processed using Alien Skin Software’s wonderful “Exposure” plug-in to emulate a “film” look and I then added a little softening to the image to give it that Hollywood “glow”.

Hopefully you agree this is a fabulous timeless look to try to achieve and something that would look absolutely fabulous on a loved one’s wall.

This is one of the most common questions to ask a wedding photographer, and our suggestion is always as soon as you possibly can. After the Wedding Venue is booked, invariably the next thing that should be on your list is the Wedding Photographer.

Just this past week I’ve had to turn away over half a dozen couples for peak wedding dates next year, that I am already booked for. As award-winning wedding photographers we are very much in demand, and sadly I can personally only photograph one wedding in any one day.

Quite often I will see Wedding Magazines publish planning timetables – they are extremely useful, my wife Morag used one of these herself when we were planning our wedding. Usually this list will suggest booking a photographer 6-12 months before the wedding. Honestly, if you are passionate about your wedding photography and have a photographer in mind, then please please please contact him or her long before this as you will sadly be disappointed if you leave it until too late.

We are very fortunate to be amongst Scotland’s most popular wedding photographers and we have to put up the “fully booked” signs earlier and earlier each year. So please, if you would like us to photograph your wedding day, then don’t leave it too late. Get in touch as soon as your wedding venue is booked.

Remember there are a lot of good wedding photographers in Scotland. Sadly the opposite is also very true, so spend time researching your choices – Make sure the photographer can show you images from a number of complete weddings, and make sure those images were not taken on a specially setup “portfolio builder” training day using models. Look for photographers who are members of recognised Professional organisations such as the Master Photographers Association – proof of their ability and professionalism. Once you find the right photographer, book them right away. You won’t regret it.

Now having booked your Wedding Photographer – what’s next? The Band! There are some great bands out there that will keep your wedding reception jumping – some of our own favourites include Beep The Jeep (they played at our wedding), Funky Bumpers, Ernest and The Copycats.

Lastly, a little sales pitch from us – we photograph weddings and we believe we do it very well. It appears a number of people agree with us and we are delighted to have won a lot of awards for our work. A few weeks back we had the pleasure of photographing the pre-wedding shoot for Gillian Walker and Paul McAllister.

Gillian is a former work colleague of Morag’s so it was great to catch up with them both.

We took the couple to the grounds of Stirling University for their pre-wedding shoot and as you can see we came away with some beautiful photographs.

Outdoor Portrait Photography can be a lot of fun as this photoshoot with Tracey Mitchell and her favourite niece Jan proved.

We took the two ladies out to Stirling University for their Portrait Photography session. The session lasted an hour and as you can see they had a ball.

Little Jan was such a character and there was never a dull moment.

Tracey was absolutely delighted with the final set of images, and now has a set of images that they both can treasure forever.

Last Summer we ran a promotion for a “fashion style” photoshoot - this was an opportunity to have a portrait photography session held outdoors in a natural environment.

These sessions proved very popular as it provided the client with a very different set of photographs than they might normally expect from a family portrait studio.

This photoshoot of Francesca Stuart was taken down at the old Army Barracks at the back of Stirling Train Station – this is an area of the town that is slowly (very slowly!) being re-developed, and these Army Barracks are being converted into offices.

We also took Francesca down to the new Stirling Bridge over the railway, which is always a favourite location on mine.

Our very first wedding of the 2012 Scottish Wedding Photography season was Elaine and Simon Humphrey’s which took place in the stunningly beautiful Dundas Castle near Edinburgh.

Dundas Castle is a real favourite amongst Scottish Wedding Photographers and it’s easy to see why. It simply oozes with character.

The Magnificent Dundas Castle was built in 1818 and is the stately home of Sir Jack and Lady Stewart-Clark but can be booked out for exclusive private functions. The lovingly preserved historic buildings and furnishings make this an absolutely superb venue for a fairy tale romantic wedding in a Scottish Castle. Our Bride Elaine chose a beautiful cream classic ivory satin gown with lots of ruffles, befitting the ancient surroundings. The five bridesmaids in attendance wore gowns made from gorgeous deep purple material that seemed to change colour depending how the light reflected on them. They were all very beautiful.

There are so many locations for really unusual wedding photographs at Dundas Castle. At the very top of the castle there are fantastic views of the surrounding countryside, including views to both the Forth railway and Forth road bridges (not brilliant with Alan’s vertigo though!!) Then there’s the backdrop of the castle itself – very majestic and packed full of history. But it was the romantic Boathouse in the grounds of the Estate that held the most appeal for our bridal couple so we headed down there, where there were magnificent views over a gorgeous lake alive with swans, ducks and other wildlife.

Simon and Elaine live in Edinburgh but Elaine originally hailed from Forfar, as did most of her five stunning bridesmaids. Her parents own a livery stable in Forfar and a common theme throughout all of the speeches is that Elaine is more than keen on horse-riding! Indeed she’s promised to think about a post wedding ‘Rock the Frock’ shoot with her horses! We can’t wait for that!

Whilst we are primarily known for our Wedding Photography, I am also a Portrait Photographer, and this is an area of our business that is growing rapidly.

When we launched the portraiture side of our business last year, I didn’t want to be yet another family portrait photographer that churned out the typical family group images on a white background that is very common these days. Just like our wedding photography, we wanted to be different. Very different. With a focus on quality to provide images that stand out from the crowd.

On a location portrait shoot I typically bring lighting equipment with me, and this often surprises our clients – particularly on a sunny day, as they can’t quite understand why I would use flash lighting when there is already plenty of light. I then explain how using additional lighting allows me to control and shape the light and add drama to a scene – something that would be impossible using just the available light. It makes our images different, and best of all, the clients love them when they see the final results.

With this in mind, I’m always experimenting and playing with light. On our last Florida trip I invested in some new lighting equipment to help enhance our images even further. Normal portable flash units (or “strobes” as we professional photographers like to call them), have a limited amount of power and on a sunny day, they simply don’t have enough power to provide enough light to counteract a bright sun. The answer then is to use full blown studio lights which are far more powerful – but then you have to lug around very heavy battery units and there are trailing cables etc etc – not ideal.

This is where my latest purchase comes in as it sits in the middle of the power range, right between a portable flash unit and a studio unit – it is however just as portable, and only slightly larger. Much easier to control the sun and put light where I want it. For the photographers reading this the light is a Quantum QFlash T5DR Unit and it integrates well with my existing Nikon SB900 strobe units.

So here are some images from my first shoot with the new light. These were all shot in Florida, but they could just as easily have been shot in Stirling (okay – use your imagination a little LOL). Morag and I own a Vacation Villa out there and try to get out to Florida as often as we can.  Our model is Kathryn Miller who we have photographed many times before.  The shots were taken over two sessions – one close to our home in Florida which is about 5 miles from Disney. Even though it is close to the tourist attractions, we are surrounded by a fabulous forest and lots of small lakes. The lake you see in the image below is right behind our house, looking out from the pool deck.

The second shoot was at Old Town in Kissimmee which will be familiar to most of you if you’ve ever been to the Disney area. That second shoot was a bit of a washout sadly as within minutes of starting we got hit by a major Lightning storm – however we still managed to get some great images.

This past month we’ve been honoured to pick up some more major awards for our Wedding and Portrait Photography.

Firstly, I received notification from the Artistic Guild of the Wedding Photojournalists Association (AG|WPJA.com), that I had received a Third Place Award in the “Emotion” Category in their latest Quarterly competition.

The AGWPJA competitions are held quarterly and entries are received from all over the World, and the standard is always extremely high, so I was absolutely delighted.

The winning image was from Gemma and Colin Fleming’s Wedding at Balbirnie house in Fife.

The Judges commented “The emotions displayed by the bride can easily be felt. Usually there is a smile or a serious look. Here, however, you can feel the pounding of her heart and her struggle to keep herself from breaking into tears.”

Our second set of awards was at the Annual Scottish Region Awards for the Master Photographers Association. This is the highlight of the year for Professional Photographers in Scotland, and last year, as a new member of the Association, I could only enter into the “Most Promising” categories, which is reserved for members of two years or less.

This year, having become a fully qualified member of the MPA, I was able to enter into any category, so it was time to play “with the big boys” so to speak.

Whilst I was confident in my work, my objective was to come away with one Merit Award, and when I saw the standard of entries, I thought that I would be very lucky to come away with anything.

However, luck was with me on the night, and I came away with Five Awards – Three Merit Awards and Two Awards of Excellence, so I was absolutely delighted.

This was our first wedding at Glenskirlie Castle for the 2012 season and what a wonderful start to the wedding photography season it was! We had a stunning Bride and Groom and Glenskirlie Castle was looking fantastic.

Weddings at Glenskirlie are always a delight to photograph, but today it was even better. The Hotel management had recently installed some new landscaping at the front of the hotel showing off lots of early spring colour with new plants and an early show of daffodils. It made for some stunning wedding photographs of our happy couple, Michelle and Chris.

I had photographed Michelle and Chris a few weeks earlier for their Pre-Wedding Photographs. This is a great opportunity to get to know the couple before their big day and ensures everyone is much more relaxed. We also include a complimentary pre-wedding photoshoot with all of our Album Collections, which include a 20 x 16 print of their favourite image, which they can then use as a signing print for friends and family to sign on the wedding day.

The Bride’s and Bridesmaids’ hair and make up were done by her two friends from Ireland, one of whom was the Maid of Honour – what a beautiful job they made of all of the girls. The Maid of Honour’s daughter, Mia was the Flower Girl and the Page Boy, Zach was the son of the other bridesmaid. As they were both under the age of 2, there were many entertaining moments from the boisterous pair (usually at inappropriate times!!) – they also get the cute factor off the scale all day!

Michelle wore a stunning dress with loads of layers and ruffles with little flower petals inserted in the ruffles. Absolutely stunning and with a very full skirt which provided much hilarity when we moved from place to place! The bridesmaids wore purple chiffon floor length gowns with flower motifs at the empire line. The purple colour goes beautifully with the purple heather and other wild flowers from Scotland and matched the flowers in the ceremony and reception tables perfectly. The bouquets were predominantly white hydrangeas – another beautiful winning combination for wedding flowers.

Michelle and Chris asked the Glenskirlie House Hotel staff to make their wedding meal feel like a small intimate wedding dinner and once again the wonderful staff at Glenskirlie House Hotel pulled this off without a hitch. They managed to create a warm informal atmosphere throughout the whole day which exactly matched Michelle and Chris’s expectations. They had a fantastic day from start to finish .

Wedding Photography takes me all over Scotland, and during last year’s very busy wedding photography season I found myself in almost every corner of the country.

One particular highlight was a trip down to the Borders to photograph the Wedding of Teeara and Christopher at the stunning wedding venue of Wedderburn Castle.

With such a stunning backdrop any wedding at Wedderburn Castle is going to be somewhat special. However, Teeara and Christopher took this rather wonderful Scottish Castle and injected a little bit of Indian culture to it, providing a wedding that was just brimming with colour and character.

Teeara and Christopher chose to get married on the lawn in front of the castle and fortunately the weather kindly co-operated. Christopher is American and Teeara is Indian – so they chose to have an Anglo-Indian ceremony – something quite unique and just great fun to photograph. After a short civil ceremony the second half of the wedding following traditional Indian customs with gifts being presented to the happy couple and their families.

The combination of a Stunning Scottish Castle and the beautiful colours of Indian culture made this wedding one I’ll never forget.

As Scottish Wedding Photographers, people are often surprised when we tell them we don’t usually get much snow in Scotland – however both this year and last year we’ve been lucky enough to photograph two snow-filled weddings.

Of course, when it comes to Christmas Weddings we all secretly hope for a little snow – not enough to hinder our guests arrival, but just enough to make our Winter Wedding Photographs look absolutely fabulous. Well our final wedding photography booking of 2011 left nothing to chance, selecting a location as far north as they dared in the hope that they might just be fortunate enough to get some snow for their Christmas wedding.

Today’s Wedding photography blog features the Winter Wedding of Adam and Claire Sparks who chose the delightful wedding venue of Coul House Hotel in Contin near Strathpeffer for their winter wedding celebrations and what a terrific place for a Scottish Highland wedding.

The wonderful little village of Strathpeffer is approximately 20 miles North of Inverness set in the beautiful Scottish hills and woodland or Ross and Comarty. This was officially the most Northerly wedding we’d ever photographed.

The couple were blessed with perfect winter weather for their day with just a scattering of snow as guests were arriving the evening before and then again on the wedding day. It all made for some stunning photographs!

Of course, as Scottish Wedding Photographers we have learned never to trust the weather – just the week before, we had left our house in three inches of snow, all suited and booted for a snow-filled day ahead. Of course by the time we arrived at the venue there was not a bit of snow on the ground. It was a very different story today however, with temperatures hitting minus 5 degrees, any snow was not going to melt very quickly.

Our bride Claire was an absolute trouper and was determined to get some photographs out in the grounds, despite the cold. Just as we were finishing off the photo session, the snow started to fall giving us the picture perfect winter wedding photographs.

Claire looked absolutely stunning in her beautiful wedding gown which looked just perfect against the wintery backdrop and I don’t even think you can see her teeth chattering!

The majestic wedding venue of Airth Castle Hotel in Central Scotland was the setting for today’s wedding photography blog entry, featuring the Wedding of Ganga and Kieran Welsh.

Airth Castle Hotel is an extremely popular Scottish Wedding Venue and is also very well liked amongst Scottish Wedding Photographers, with its fabulous grounds and character-filled rooms.

Part of Chief Executive Steven McLeod’s highly successful Aurora Group of Hotels, the castle is sister to Glenbervie House another very popular wedding venue as well as Solsgirth House, which has recently been taken over by the group and is also featuring well in our forward calendar of wedding photography bookings.

Airth Castle itself is steeped in Scottish History and dates back to the late 1400′s, however it wasn’t until the early 19th century that the now familiar frontage of the hotel was built.

Weddings at Airth Castle Hotel are always great fun, and it can be clearly seen that the hotel and its staff have many years experience hosting weddings. The traditions and customs they bring to proceedings on the day make it a truly spectacular occasion for everyone involved. The Master of Ceremonies, Hugh, is one of life’s great characters and among the Scottish Wedding Photography community he must be one of the most well-known MCs in Scotland.

Ganga and Kieran were blessed with a beautifully crisp and sunny Winter’s day for their Scottish Wedding. We arrived a couple of hours before the wedding ceremony to capture the fun of the bridal preparations. As is our normal routine Alan and I started photographing the detail shots, before Alan headed off to find the groomsmen, whilst I stayed with the girls.

I think I got the best job that morning as the girls were having great fun – at one point there were four bridesmaids, two flower girls, a couple of friends and Ganga’s parents all gathered in the room for some champagne prior to the ceremony.

The two flower girls were very cute and were exhausted jumping on the bed and running up and down the hotel corridors before the wedding even began!

There was a very emotional moment when Ganga’s Dad arrived to see his daughter in her wedding dress for the first time – Tears were flowing openly (including mine) – and there were some special moments when Ganga and her Dad were left by themselves for a while which I was very privileged to be allowed to capture. It’s little moments like this that make your Wedding Photographs priceless – Ganga will be able to look back at that photograph for years to come and the memories will come flooding back of the last few moments with her father before she became a married woman.

For the Wedding colour scheme, Ganga and Kieran chose a riot of various pinks and blues for the flowers used throughout the day, matching the deep blue of the bridesmaids’ dresses perfectly. They were absolutely beautiful.

Highlight of the day was the Best Man’s speech by Kieran’s brother – where he recalled some of the many letters that a very young Kieran had written to him, when his older brother first started working abroad in France – they were absolutely priceless. “Have you changed your eating habits to frogs legs and snails or do you still eat mince ‘n tatties”, was one of the “tamer” emails.

As Ganga and Kieran live down South, many of the guests travelled a long way for their wedding but it was clear their long journey was worth it, as everyone had a thoroughly enjoyable time.

We had some beautiful but challenging light for the wedding photographs. Fortunately these also happen to be Alan’s favourite conditions for creating some stunning wedding photographs – Alan has selected some of his favourite wedding photographs from the day – see if you can spot which one’s are mine!

The Second week in January each year sees the biggest event in the UK and European Professional Photographers’ Calendar – The Societies Annual Convention and Awards at the Novotel Hotel in London.

This is a week-long event, consisting of numerous Business and Photography masterclasses, a very busy trade show, and culminates in the Societies Annual Awards presentation. Keynote speakers at the show this year were the immensely talented Adam Alex and Nick Ghionis of XSight Studios.

My wife Morag and I attended the full week of the show, and I was very honoured to be invited to speak at the event this year on the subject of Marketing a Wedding Photography Business. With it being my first time speaking at the Convention I wasn’t sure how much of a turnout I would have, but fortunately the room was completely packed and it was standing room only – people were even sitting in the aisles to hear my presentation, so I was absolutely delighted.

As usual it was a fantastic social event and we met many friends old and new and it was great to catch up with everyone and compare notes. And Drink. The odd cocktail or three.

During the week one of the big events is the judging of the Annual Print competition – the standard of this competition is extremely high and attracts entries from all round the world. I was therefore delighted to gain three Merit awards and see my images on the exhibition stand at the end of the week. It was the first time I’d entered the print competition, so I was absolutely delighted with the result.

Here are the three images that gained Merit Awards:-

Sunday night was the big Awards presentation and I knew I was in the final selection for “Members Choice General Photographer of the Year” – the previous year I had won the “Members Choice Wedding Photographer of the Year”, so I was delighted to be in the final round again this year – however there were over 50 other photographers in the final round of judging – including my own Daughter Nicola – so competition was fierce. Nicola runs her own family portrait business called Bumps Babies Beyond specialising in photographing New Borns in the first weeks of their life.

So imagine our surprise when it was announced that the voting for the Members Choice General Photographer had resulted in a three way tie, with two of the winners being myself and my daughter Nicola! It was a very proud moment to walk up onstage alongside my Daughter to collect the award. The other recipient of the award was South African Photographer Alec Davies.

Of course, Nicola couldn’t help but try and upstage me by dropping the award to much hilarity – fortunately a moment captured forever on YouTube LOL

Nicola’s winning photograph (shown below) was of little Layla who was just over one week old and had went on quite the journey all the way from the South of England just to have Nicola photograph her after her Mum had seen a Dundee friend’s newborn images.  Nicola said “The pressure was on with this session purely for the fact that mum Hayley and little Layla had travelled so far and of course I wanted to do my very best, so for this image to be the one to receive the award makes it all the more special for me.”

My own photograph was the result of a challenge by another photographer to come up with an image that evoked the work of the great George Hurrell, who photographed the great Hollywood icons of the 1940′s.

2011 has been a great year for our Wedding Photography business. Although based near Stirling in Central Scotland, our Wedding Photography has taken us as far South as Southport in England, and all the way up to the North of Scotland near Inverness.

Our Scottish Wedding Photography season, began very early at the end of January for the Wedding of Claire and Scott Oram in Blairgowrie and finished just a couple of weeks ago on the 17th December for the very Winter Wedding of Claire and Adam Sparks’ at Coul House near Strathpeffer.

During this calendar year we have photographed 53 Wonderful Weddings at 42 great wedding venues, including some new venues for is including Wedderburn Castle, Pollok House, the Fairmont at St Andrews, and the stunning Hopetoun House, as well as old favourites like Dalmunzie Castle, Balbirnie House, Airth Castle and Glenbervie House Hotel.

Our particular brand of wedding photography has continued to attract attention winning 4 major National and International Awards this past year. The achievement we were most proud of was not one for our photographs however. It was being nominated as finalists in the Scottish Wedding Industry VOWS Awards – a recognition for outstanding customer service voted on by our own clients. I was also very honoured to achieve an Associateship (ASWPP) accreditation with the Society of Wedding and Portrait Professionals (SWPP) – a standard achieved by only a small percentage of professional photographers.

So from Morag and I, may we wish all of our 2011 Couples a huge thank you for being such wonderful clients and here’s wishing you all a Wonderful Happy New Year – your first together as a happy couple!

May we also wish our past couples, customers, industry partners, colleagues and friends a happy and successful 2012!

Balbirnie House is one of our favourite Scottish Wedding Venues in the depths of the Fife countryside. It is a fabulous location for romantic Scottish wedding photography offering wonderful opportunities for some stunning photographs.

In the middle of December we found ourselves back for another Scottish Wedding at Balbirnie House to photograph the Wedding of Gemma and Colin Fleming.

Gemma looked absolutely stunning wearing a ivory lace gown that showed off her petite figure to perfection. Her bridesmaid wore a champagne coloured chiffon gown which worked perfectly with the red and gold colour theme for the flowers and chair coverings.

There was wonderful piano music playing throughout the day provided by the fantastic pianist Alex Graham who encouraged guests to ask for requests! He was brilliant.

Tennis fans will no doubt recognise our Groom, Colin Fleming, as he is the Commonwealth Gold medal holder (along with Doubles partner Jocelyn Rae) and ranked number 33 in the World for Doubles. He often partners alongside another of our previous grooms, Jamie Murray.

So with Colin playing tennis at international level and Gemma being a primary school teacher, what better fodder for the wedding speeches!! Colin’s older brother, Michael, (with the aid of a projector) poked loads of fun at Colin recounting many sibling rivalry stories throughout their tennis careers (secretly you could see he is really proud of him). Not to be outdone, Gemma’s Dad, Graham, told many amusing stories about being mistaken for Gemma’s fiancé while picking stuff for their new house (as Colin is frequently away on tour). There was much hilarity when he told us what Gemma’s pupils had to say about her: “she brought in Irn Bru for health food day”. Very funny!

When we left our home near Stirling that morning there was a fair amount of snow underfoot so we dressed appropriately in our good snow boots and heavy coats and looked forward to some snowy white wedding shots! When we got to Balbirnie House there was not a bit of snow to be seen. How daft did I look in my snow boots?! We did capture some stunning cold crisp outdoor shots though as you will see below.

As soon as the room was set up for the evening’s entertainment and the band played their first note, the dance floor was packed and looked liked staying that way for the rest of the night. All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable day for all involved….

Weddings at Balbirnie House are always fabulous, but Alan says that “Carlsberg must have organised this wedding though” as it was just so perfect resulting in a huge amount of images that we just have to share with you. So as usual here are out favourite wedding photographs from the day.

Photographers may like to note that we’ve changed our processing regime and have started using VSCO Film instead of Alien Skin Exposure to emulate our favourite films Kodak Porta and Tri-X – we’re delighted with the results.

Band Photography or Music Photography is an area of portrait photography that I’ve always thought would be good fun – working alongside another creative where the prime objective is to come up with something cool sounds like a lot of fun.

I had a taste of this genre of portrait photography a few months ago when musician Robbie Leeson contacted me to do one of our Street Fashion Photoshoots in Stirling.  As is obvious from the photographs Robbie is a Saxophonist and he wanted some cool images that would resemble the typical kind of images that you would find on a rock band’s album cover.   I’ve featured some of the photographs from this shoot before on my blog, but I thought it deserved a blog post of its own.

So with the brief in hand I headed off to meet Robbie to do some portrait photography in Stirling. We met at Forthside in Stirling which is one of my favourite shooting locations in Central Scotland for this type of work. Forthside is the new part of Stirling that the local council are developing (very slowly I might add) to extend the City Centre across the rail tracks and closer to the River Forth.

Most of these photographs were taken using off-camera flash triggered by the fabulous RadioPopper system, and we were very lucky to have some fabulous sunlight creating a great “ray” effect under the new Stirling bridge.

As a Scottish Wedding Photographer I’m known for my style of contemporary and “cool” wedding photographs, so it was nice to extend that style out of the wedding photography arena.

Edinburgh Corn Exchange is well known as a popular Venue amongst Wedding Photographers in Edinburgh as they also run a very popular Wedding Fayre.  Back in August I found myself at the Edinburgh wedding venue for the first time and I can see why it is so popular, as it is very contemporary inside with some fabulous lighting.

However, lighting like this can cause problems for photographers as it can fool your camera’s sensor and give very strange results.

In such circumstances wedding photographers have two options – cancel out the ambient lighting buy using flash – thereby providing your own lighting OR capture the ambient lighting, but you then run the risk of colour inconsistencies.

I would personally never use flash in a Wedding Ceremony situation as it is extremely obtrusive, so my choice would always be to capture the ambient light. So how do I ensure I get accurate colour results when you have “mood lighting” that renders a scene almost totally purple?

Fortunately I am always well prepared for such situations as I use the X-Rite Colour Checker Passport system to ensure I can get accurate colour reproduction no matter what the lighting conditions. The camera captures an image of the colour checker passport and when back at base I run the image through some software to calibrate the camera to those exact lighting conditions – it works extremely well and has saved me from hours of trying to correct colour correction due to a strange lighting mix at a venue.

Today’s event at Edinburgh Corn Exchange was the Wedding of Lynsey and John Deans – we started at Lynsey’s parents house on the outskirts of Edinburgh, before heading into the City Centre. Edinburgh Corn Exchange lends itself to some very contemporary wedding photography and Lynsey and John were great to work with, so I had great fun exploring the back alleys behind the venue looking for a different take on a Wedding Photography image – Lynsey and John “dared to be different” and as a result ended up with some stunning wedding photographs that made it into our Weddings with WOW showreel and have also been featured in some of our advertising.

Another of our favourite Scottish Wedding Venues this year has got to be Lochgreen House Hotel in Troon. It’s a joy to photograph Weddings at Lochgreen House Hotel as it’s an absolutely gorgeous hotel with some lovely gardens for capturing some really wonderful wedding photographs.

We found ourselves back in Troon for another Wedding at Lochgreen House in mid-September for the Wedding of Jacqueline and David Hay. This wedding proved to be doubly exciting as the bride and groom also asked if we could take a few Wedding Photographs on the beach! Now when we think of Wedding Photography in Scotland, we think mountains, glens, castles and bonnie purple heather. (That’s the plant not the Bride!). Not many Wedding Photographers in Scotland get a chance to take wedding photographs on a beach in Scotland, so we jumped at the opportunity! The wedding party donned their wellies and off we went down to Troon Beach. It was a very grey day, with a wee bit of a cold breeze off the sea but thankfully no rain.

The fun started earlier in the day with Jacqui and her bridesmaids in their Lochgreen Hotel room getting ready, where we can safely say the bride was man-handled into her beautiful lace up dress (Jacqui will know exactly what we mean!). Everyone was perspiring profusely getting the pesky laces to stay straight and make sure it was tight enough, including the two make up artists and the photographer (Morag not Alan)!

It was a very informal Humanist Wedding Ceremony where the cheeky chap Steven Bunch (Bunchie) was mentioned a few times as he was responsible for firing the cupid’s arrow which first brought Jacqueline and David together 6 years ago.

Jacqui and David asked us to bring along a “photo booth” for later in the evening and I’m delighted to say that everyone had loads of fun striking all sorts of poses and pulling some weird faces!

Oh and one last thing…. I’ll never forget the 15 EXTREMELY LOUD confetti bombs that went off AFTER the group photograph in the gardens. The Bride and Groom got such a fright they nearly landed in Prestwick and Alan nearly got blown off the roof but managed to stagger back in time to get a couple of shots.

In mid October, we had a gorgeous, but cold weekend for Wedding Photography in Scotland and found ourselves in St Andrews for a Wedding at the spectacular Fairmont Hotel, St Andrews Bay.  Strictly speaking though, it wasn’t a full wedding, it was only half of it.  It was in fact our first Asian Wedding and we were to photograph the “Walima” Celebration for Saeed and Laraeb.  The “Wallima” is the second of the two traditional parts of an Islamic Wedding is the groom’s family’s reception for their guests and friend to meet the bride’s family and their son’s new wife.

Being our first Asian Wedding, we had a lot to learn and Saeed and his cousin Shabaz were very helpful in educating me in what needs to be photographed and when.  Shahbaz is a fabulous photographer in his own right, so I was very honoured to hear that he had recommended me to the couple. The actual wedding ceremony was held a week before, but what happens at a Walima is not dissimilar to what happens immediately after a European Wedding ceremony.  Basically we have the opportunity to photograph the couple first before all their guests arrive, then we photograph the family groups and then photograph the banquet itself and receiving of gifts, before finally finishing off with some fabulous dancing.

This was also our first Wedding at the Fairmont Hotel in St Andrews, so it was great to have an opportunity to photograph there with less of the time pressures of a European Wedding.  We had over two hours with Saeed and Laraeb before their guests arrived (and there were a lot – over 350 guests by my headcount) – so it was great to be able to do the Couples portraits in such a relaxed manner.

Laraeb looked stunning on her beautiful gowns and Morag was particularly envious of her eye make-up.

Over the Summer and Autumn months we’ve been very busy with our Fashion Photoshoot Experience sessions that we launched back in May with a special promotion we ran alongside Groupon. This was a bit of a marketing trial for us, but it has been very successful, so we are going to continue the Fashion Portrait shoots as a key part of our business alongside our very successful Wedding Photography services. We photograph all of our fashion shoots on location in and around the Stirling area. We believe they offer something very different from a typical family portrait shoot and our aim is to create fashion inspired images that you would associate with a magazine style shoot.

The fashion portrait shoots also give us the opportunity to experiment with new lighting setups which often then find themselves feeding over into our Wedding Photography – once of the key reasons why we believe our wedding photography looks just a little bit different and sets our work apart.

With Hopetoun House being such a gorgeous location there were lots of opportunities for fantastic photographs. From the historical ‘red room’, to the old stairwell with the murals on the walls under the glass atrium, to the magnificent stairs at the front, to the wonderful tree lined avenue with leaves in every autumn shade imaginable and to the fabulous lake and fountain at the rear of the house complete with two swans! Weddings at Hopetoun House are an absolute paradise for any Scottish Wedding Photographer.

For their Wedding at Hopetoun House, Zoe and Duncan chose autumnal colours for their colour scheme, giving the wedding a real Halloween feel. Perfect for the date they chose for their wedding. They even had all of their parents growing gourds and pumpkins for the table decorations! Planet Flowers  did them really proud with some of the most beautiful floral decorations we’ve ever seen.

Once again we were blessed with dry weather while everyone arrived and afterwards for the photos. We literally just stepped inside for the reception when the heavens opened!

It is definitely one of our favourites and it was great to be back at Dalmunzie for the Wedding of Kate and Tyron.  Once again at Dalmunzie we were lucky enough to have a dry day – this meant that the romantic wedding ceremony and champagne reception could take place on the front lawn.

The bride chose a dusky pink figure hugging satin wedding dress and veil, with a vintage rose bouquet for herself and black figure hugging satin dresses for the two bridesmaids, who were also her Sisters. The style suited them beautifully as the Sisters were all blessed with the same fabulously slim genes! The groomsmen also wore matching vintage roses as their buttonholes.

The Groom, Tyron is South African and many of his friends and relatives travelled to Scotland for the wedding and with his Master of Ceremonies from Australia it made for some interesting and hilarious conversations throughout the day.

The food, as always at Dalmunzie, was absolutely amazing with Wild Mushroom Risotto, Venison, and Wild Berry desserts included in the wedding breakfast menu. Alan was even served up his own little slice of chocolate cake with a candle to mark his birthday courtesy of the Dalmunzie staff!

The evening entertainment began with the Dave Mackay Band  who we’ve heard before and they are brilliant. The dancing was in full swing by the time we left and everyone was having an absolute ball.

Once again a fantastic wedding again hosted by the wonderful Dalmunzie team.

Debbie and Derek’s Speckamp’s Wedding Ceremony was held in the magnificent Holy Rude Church in Stirling, founded in 1129 by David I and where King James VI was crowned as a child! 

Debbie and Derek’s Wedding Day started for us at Debbie’s parents house in Maddiston, Falkirk with Debbie and her bridesmaids. Debbie and her Mum were some of the most efficient wedding organisers we’ve ever seen. Every individual item of each person’s wedding attire was hung on a clothes rack in the spare room, including their under garments (even her Dad, Steven’s!), whilst the dresses were hung on picture hooks on the walls. We were reliably informed everything had been laid out like that for over six weeks. Fabulous.

Then it was off to the Holy Rude Church to meet Derek to grab some photographs of the guys.  Shortly afterwards Debbie and her entourage arrived in brilliant sunshine and strolled down the very long aisle of the splendid historic church for the wedding ceremony.

After the ceremony, we all then moved over to another historic location, Cowane’s Hospital bowling green, for some family group photos and then back into the Church for some Bridal portraits. With the bride in a gorgeous cream lace wedding dress with long veil and the bridesmaids’ coral Grecian style dresses, we were sure to capture some fantastic wedding photographs.

The wedding breakfast and celebrations were in the local Golden Lion Hotel in King Street Stirling, yet another local historic landmark.

Later that evening we were able to get some fun shots in the middle of the historic main thoroughfare of Stirling.

A beautiful wedding day with some lovely people.

This wedding day started with bridal preparations at the bride’s parents’ house in Camelon, Falkirk. With a bride, three bridesmaids (including a set of twins), two flowergirls, two Mums and a Dad, there was plenty of excitement in the house. At one point most of us were in one bedroom with the bride sprawled on the bed in all her finery to get her into her shoes. Great pictures.

Debbie had chosen a fantastic T-length dress for herself with loads of lace and diamante detail topped off with a cute little birdcage veil. Deep purple was the chosen colour for the bridesmaids’ Grecian style dresses and white for the smaller ones. The flowers were amazing too picking up the colours in the dresses to perfection.

Then it was off to The Vu at Bathgate for the Ceremony and Reception. We had heard a lot from our fellow Scottish Wedding Photographers about the stunning location of The Vu and I have to say we were not disappointed. The ceremony was held in the ‘Water Lily’ building then it was across to the restaurant for the wedding breakfast and dancing. There is loads of space outside and a beautiful lake complete with a little jetty for some lovely wedding photographs of the happy couple and their family and friends.

Time for photography was a little limited due to the precision timings that The Vu operate but Debbie and Gary were happy to come out to play for a wee while after dinner to get more gorgeous shots around the lake.
